We are a surgical specialist group, which provides training and advice in foot and ankle surgery. We are particularly interested in techniques which involve arthroscopic (keyhole) procedures which we believe reduce the relative risk of complications in foot and ankle surgery.
Such surgery demands the application of specialist skills which must be acquired through targeted training. Although surgeons may have experienced some aspects of arthroscopy in their foot and ankle training, it is by no means uniform.
In the South West of the UK led by Steve Parsons and Ian Winson these skills are more routinely available. It is particularly from these surgeons and their colleagues that training course faculties can be derived. To provide such courses we are happy to form partnerships with either commercial companies or with surgeons in different locations in the world who wish to try to stimulate interest in this form of practice.
We provide a well structured program of lectures and “hands on” cadaver surgery which has a proven track record and popular with participants. We are also able to provide consultancy advice on the structure and provision of foot and ankle treatment services to individuals, clinics and hospital authorities who wish to develop their service. We are happy to advise industrial partners on developments in this field.
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Truro
Steve is one of the most experienced orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons in the UK and has been such for most of his consultant career. He originally went to medical school in London but trained in trauma and orthopaedics in Sheffield and Southampton before settling into consultant practice in the south west of the UK.
He has been President of the British Foot and Ankle Society and council member of European Foot and Ankle Society.
His extensive experience of treating all the disorders affecting the structure of the foot and ankle from trauma through complex deformity to arthritis including childhood problems.
He has constantly challenged the thought processes behind the planning and execution of surgery to the foot and ankle with a philosophy of trying to maximise the benefit of surgery while minimising the risk to patients.
He is perhaps best known for his work on arthroscopic (keyhole) techniques for the treatment of foot and ankle disorders which particularly require fusion of joints. He is one of the leaders of a course that trains surgeons in these techniques.
His research interests are based largely in the area of the practice of foot and ankle care particularly looking at the outcomes of complex keyhole surgery foot and ankle surgery.
He has been a leading thinker in the way surgeons need to plan the treatment of foot and ankle disorders.
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Bristol
Ian is one of the most senior orthopaedic surgeons in the UK. He has a special interest in the problems of the foot and ankle for most of his consultant career. He has been a President of the British Foot and Ankle Society, of the European Foot and Ankle Society and most recently President of the British Orthopaedic Association.
He has extensive experience of treating all the disorders affecting the structure of the foot and ankle from trauma through complex deformity to arthritis and the effects of diabetes.
He has treated patients who have been top class rugby players, footballers and cricketers.
He has been involved in the design of devices used in the surgery of the foot and ankle especially an ankle replacement.
He is perhaps best known for his work on arthroscopic (keyhole) techniques for the treatment of foot and ankle disorders designed to limit the risks of surgery. This has been extensively supported by his colleagues in particularly the South West of the UK. The desire to see these techniques reliably used to the benefit of patients has led to the production of an advanced course in Foot and Ankle Arthroscopy. He has designed this course particularly conjunction with his highly experienced colleague Steve Parsons with whom he leads Foot and Ankle World Wide, which is designed as a educational and advice clinical company.
